Minoan Heritage
In Crete, the line between myth and history becomes blurred, with each corner of the island carrying tales from antiquity to the present. At the heart of this narrative is the Minoan civilization, Europe’s first, which thrived from 3000 BC to 1200 BC in Central and Eastern Crete.
Iconic palaces such as Knossos, Phaestus, Malia, Zakros, Tylissos, and opulent mansions like those at Agia Triada and Zominthos showcase the brilliance of Minoan architecture, pottery, jewelry, and art. The Minoan fleet, a Mediterranean trade powerhouse, brought prosperity to Crete, with shipyards like Saint Theodori at Vathianos Kambos constructing vessels that voyaged as far as Scandinavia.
Minoan spirituality revered deities like the Mother Goddess, protectors of cities, homes, harvests, and the underworld. Sacred rituals took place in caves and atop peaks, with sanctuaries found at Youchtas, Hosto Nero, Vrysinas, Petsofas, Traostalos, and others, including the significant Diktaean, Idaean, and Kamares Caves. Crete’s rich history is a tapestry woven with threads of myth and reality, waiting to be discovered.
