Minoan Heritage
In Crete, the boundary between myths and history blurs, and history itself takes on the aura of myth. Spanning from antiquity to the present, every corner of the island holds a tale, whether brief or epic. From ancient times to the contemporary age, each location carries its own narrative, waiting to be unveiled.
Crete birthed Europe's first civilization, the Minoans, flourishing in Central and Eastern Crete from 3000 BC to 1200 BC. Iconic palaces like Knossos, Phaestus, Malia, Zakros, Tylissos, and more, along with opulent mansions at Agia Triada, Zominthos, Amnisos, and others, showcase Minoan brilliance in architecture, pottery, jewelry, and art.
The Minoan fleet, a Mediterranean trade powerhouse, enriched Crete with cypress and goods. Shipyards like Saint Theodori at Vathianos Kambos crafted vessels loaded with treasures, voyaging to Scandinavia and beyond, from ports like Dia, Katsambas, Komos, Zakros, Psira, Mochlos, and Petras.
Minoan spirituality honored deities like the Mother Goddess, protectors of cities, homes, harvests, and the underworld. Caves and peaks hosted sacred rituals, with sanctuaries atop Youchtas, Hosto Nero, Vrysinas, Petsofas, Traostalos, and others. Diktaean, Idaean, and Kamares Caves held significant roles too.
